What is a crossover story?

In Fan Fiction, a crossover story is a story mixing elements or characters of two or more fandoms. But this doesn't only apply to Fan Fiction, of course. You have crossovers in movies ( think of "Aliens vs Predators", or "Freddy vs Jason". They happened in television too (Hercules/Xena, Buffy/Angel...), and were often used to boost ratings. Although crossovers are very common in comic books within the same publisher, it would happened that two of these publishers would join in special projects (where Batman would meet Spider-man, for example...)

In Fan Fiction, crossovers are VERY common and highly popular. And they go beyond what is done in television, movies or comic books. There is no boundaries in Fan Fiction crossovers. No matter the difference of genres between them, television series will mix, even if they are as different from each other as a Star Trek series or any anime you can think of. No matter the media, characters from movies will get entangled in the world of any book, or comic strips.

That's the way of Fan Fiction crossovers. Sometimes it works, and unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't. But when it does work, you might be facing a wonderful story.

Back in the late 60s, with the TV Century 21 magazine, Captain Scarlet was already confronted with some sort of crossover, when the publisher decided to make all the Anderson series as part of the same universe - dubbed Anderverse, since then. This had for consequence to put elements of other Anderson shows into the back history of the Scarlet characters (Rhapsody as being the protégée of Thunderbirds' Lady Penelope, Lieutenant Green and Captain Grey as former members of Stingray's Marineville, etc.) These details generally put aside, there is a double standard today as to accept the Anderverse as such as canon or not, and Fan Fiction authors have been taken from this whatever they needed or wanted to for their stories. Whatever their takes on it, many Fan Fiction mixing elements - or more specifically characters - of two or more Anderson shows can be considered as crossover fictions.

SYNCHRONICITY, by Marion Woods. The latest Mysteron cryptic threat seems to be related to the missing Lieutenant Garnet's investigation, concerning a machine built to control volcanic eruptions, but that can also be used to created them. Captains Scarlet, Blue and Grey are sent to continue the investigation, but the mission goes terribly wrong when Scarlet is swapped away in an undercover cave and discovers not only the missing Spectrum officer, but a passageway to strange new worlds - not unlike his own, but oh so different!
