Yes I do think Rhapsody's accent was a bit much; but I suppose it does fit the image of her character, as she was meant to be super posh and all.
It didn't really bother me as a kid, but probably did internalise it and end up thinking of her as a bit prissy [she says, with her southern middle class eloqution, lol].
Destiny's is pretty dire too, but then maybe they had to lay it on a bit thick so everyone to get the idea. It was never going to be very authentic anyway.

The best voice was Ed Bishop's Captain Blue - even if it didn't sound very authentically Bostonian - which I rather think it didn't. However, that's only from what I've heard on TV and radio, or off the Internet - I've never been to the place myself.
I still think the Original series was better voiced than NCS.
(That'll surprise everyone...

Indeed, Blue's voice has that calm capable quality, you'd feel very reassured with him as your pilot.
When it comes to accents my theory is 'less is more'. Blue is quite well travelled, and raised in ivy league/upper class circles, so his accent wouldn't be that strongly 'Bostinian' anyway.
Oh I quite agree.

haha I like that! *chime sounds* "this is your Captain, Ed Bishop... we're currently overflying the City of London, where you can hear, if situated in the correct location, Big Ben strike 13. We'll be landing at London Airport in 5 minutes. And dont worry, there's not a Delta Tango 1 9ner in sight!"

I can say without a doubt that Blue definitely does NOT have a Bostonian accent. Some of those guys, such as Marc Frattasio of the sadly-departed SuperM modeling site, need subtitles when they speak.
It's quite common in the US for the regional accents to disappear the higher up one goes in the social scale. This isn't true all the time, of course; my son and I get a kick out of those who live in our city's suburbs (who are ALWAYS looking for an opportunity to proclaim how much better they are than us dirtbags who live in the city) seeming to have the strongest low-class "city" accents.

OK, maybe I was a little too hasty.

Totally agree with you there, many of the voices were like that then. Dont know whether that was down to sound quality or a specific voice directors wanted or found were the only ones their audiences would expect - particularly if it was something looking at being marketed in the US.

However, I guess like many little girls I was swayed by that gorgeous waterfall of red hair and those wide blue eyes, and first impressions tend to stay with you forever.
ps. It isn't the poor girls fault she speaks with a perfect BBC accent...and I would secretly kill for it!

They do that, and with Rhapsody she's inadvertently influenced several of my female characters in my stories outside of Scarlet. Even going so far to call one Rhapsody (McKnight). I really need to get some air and a life...
