Proteus
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
a) They were from different provinces, spoke completely different dialects, and didn't want to communicate solely in picture-character writing;
b) They actually were speaking the same dialect of Chinese, but the series was naturally dubbed for broadcasting to English-speaking countries;
c) Gerry Anderson couldn't find a Chinese person to do the voiceover.
Take your pick!

It was really cool to see the entire episode with all the trimmings after not seeing it for a few months. I really liked the action in this one!
I'm curious now, as I remember seeing another comment from someone a while ago saying he hadn't seen one of the episodes he'd worked on. I thought you guys would have been the first to see the completed episodes, especially those you worked on?

I did see the episode, just hadnt seen it in 5 months.

Most of the time we saw them from start to finish. From Script>Low-res Animatics>Rendered Shots>Final Cut
We viewed dailies of the episode as shots were completed until the glorious day when the episode was complete!
Then the whips came crashing down and it was BACK TO WORK!

Where would be the fun in that?

I don't like it, and I didn't like it in the original series, when for example we saw the Mysterons turn an oil valve on by remote control, change the molecular structure of a bottle of champagne, take over the controls of an airliner etc etc - and yet they can't even crash something as potentially easy to sabotage as a flying aircraft carrier! I guess one just has to suspend disbelief over things like that.

This one goes right back to the question of how serious the Mysterons actually are. In the original series, yes - they were toying with us. They probably could have destroyed Cloudbase, but they wanted to make Spectrum squirm a bit, so they didn't bother. But this time around? This time, it isn't my impression they're feeling so playful. They're really out to get us - the Proteus incident was a genuine attempt to set the planet ablaze, after all - but in general they're not setting about it in a rational manner. That's the plot hole to which I'm referring - not one in this episode, but in the concept as a whole.

I think this is one of the things that bugs me about the new series. I really wonder how much of what's going on in the 'war of nerves' (now NCS has finally used the phrase) is understood by the viewers who are not familiar with the original series? And if it really is important any more that the Mysterons do have an identifiable 'character' or modus operendi?
Several of the stories have been concerned with the Mysterons' ability to subvert computer technolgy/robots/machines to make their attacks - if they can do that what's to stop them just 'pulling the plug' on the whole planet's computerised systems and wiping us out..?
Presumably the Mysterons are now meant to appear even more dangerous - in that they can achieve so much without needing a human agent and avoiding the need to kill their victim/agent as a consequence. Even Captain Black is apparantly not needed everytime they launch an attack. Correct me if I'm wrong - which I am sure there are many eager to do - but wasn't Black present for every Mysteron attack in the original series?
Without the weekly threat, the only link to the Mysterons is the green light and the rings... especially as MoM in it's - and I use the phrase lightly - wisdom, now no longer runs the opening credits - as obscure as they were in explaining what had happened to our hero back on Mars...
These Mysterons do seem more vindictive and more 'warlike' - despite their protestations of being peaceful - and able to carry out their schemes far more effectively. But they do not do it.
Spectrum is still very much in the dark - they have still not devised anything other than a 'genetic' blood test to identify Mysteron agents...
I remember Scarlet getting voices in his head occasionally, but does he even get nauseous in this series?

My only minor criticism is that three male characters on the boat - Scarlet and the two younger sailors - looked very similar to each other. And while the Mysterons had no problem picking off ALL the sailors, the Spectrum personnel ALL seemed to be indestructible...
Action packed with brilliant CGI - they've done it again!
