Now there's an episode that went in a totally different direction to one I expected.

I don't know about anyone else but I thought that the ending was a bit of a let-down. I was hoping that the Mysterons had discovered the anti-war faction and had stopped the alternate universe unfolding before the city could be destroyed. Instead, we get a "decoy".

Thiis simply puts the emphasis on the Mysterons being the Bad Guys rather than there being a multi-faceted aspect to them.

What do you think?

I think there's going to be more layers to this than we can think, for now. No, I don't think it's a matter of the Mysterons being 'bad through and through' - after all, Dr Who was a good guy, and was prevented from going back in time by various laws and rules - Blinovitch, eat your heart out!

I just assumed it was the Mysterons allowing the rebels to nearly succeed and then just snatch victory away from them. But there was so much 'unreality' around, we'll probably never know if the approach to the Mysteron city really happened...again...does that make sense?

I was half expecting Whoopi Goldberg or Patrick Stewart to show up in the Christmas scene...

Nice to see the sequence from the first episode was almost completely redone, visually...and aurally? There were definitely lines that weren't there the first time round...

Loved the birds above the ship.

Not sure about the ending - there's a mystery there me thinks.

Ooh...the Ochre killing Blue thing could have been a sign that this *was* a rebel ship...they gave her a second chance and this time she didn't shoot.

i'm sorry but i thought it was a poor episode ... a poor story, a virtual re-write of 'Rat trap' ...
once the woman in yellow started talking with the "Paul's, Adam's, Ian's" it got worse ...
in fact i had to turn the sound down, i was cringing ...
i don't mind hearing "Paul" or "Adam" occasionally, but not all the time ..
it's like one big happy family isn't it !!.

even the appearance of Captain Black (sorry,"Conrad") could'nt turn the episode round for me ...

Just finished rewatching it...and now I think I agree with Stevie P. Something laughs evilly when Ochre kills Blue, which I hadn't noticed the first time around...

Of course there were new lines. The whole point of that scene was Scarlet trying to prevent Black firing as he knew what would happen if he did.

I loved this episode, so many things kept me guessing. A few segments were too predictable though, such as when Destiny said she had kids I instantly knew they were Blacks. The ending was great too. I was expectingt the laser would blow up the ship just before Scarlet managed to prevent Black firing, but what actually happened was far more pleasing, and leaves a lot open to speculation.

My major gripe though was with how the Mysterons actually ended up winning. Surely the world isn't still that dependant on fossil fuels? And why doesn't anyone else montier the oil fields? Plus there's the issue of how exactly they're going to cover up this loss of oil.

Also, was it just me, or did Orche's accent keep on changing in strength?

I don't mean new lines as in the "They're only scanning us, not attacking!" bits.

In the first episode, Black grumbles "So, we keep looking..." In this one, he asks, "So we keep looking?" and Scarlet replies "We keep looking."

I just like the fact there is no 'simple' explanantion. 'Decoy' seems almost too simplistic, and my god, the Mysterons could just wipe us out with a small number of those 'ships'.

I'm intrigued more than ever that the series is hopefully deeper in concept than we can imagine now. I hope it does get another series, to explore more fully what's going on - assuming Earth isn't destroyed in the final episode!

WOW just WOW.
Amazing episode, In my opnion the best episode yet.
Great CGI, Great story that had lot's of twist's and you never knew what was going to happen next.
Use of the other Captain's.
Plus the Mysteron's won in the end.

I really liked the CGI effects used for the Mysteron ship, both outside and inside, and the Albatross sequences. And I was pleased to see Fred back again!! (Is that really what he's called, it said it on the box of toy vehicles)?!

As for the story, I agree with Stevie P that it would be a real shame if the whole thing did turn out to be just an elaborate deception - I'd rather Shaqui was right and it turns out to be a little deeper. It could be the 'bad' mysterons foiled a genuine plot by the sympathetic faction to let Scarlet stop the war, and turned it to their own advantage, who knows. Either way I think it shows the 'bad' (sorry can't think of another word to use) mysterons are turning out to be very devious and fully intent on keeping the war going. They now know that Scarlet would have stopped the war if he could have done (and at some personal cost to himself!), but that didn't seem to have much effect on Blacks' response "you cannot undo what has already been done".

I know it has been discussed before on the forum that CITV are not showing the episodes in the order the production team 'intended' them to be shown - and (for what it is worth) this episode was listed as being number 19 in the schedule (as posted on TV Century 21 website).
Aegis remarked that maybe the effectiveness of the narrative storylines were being diluted by the episodes being shown out of order (this was with reference to the Scarlet/Destiny romance subplot and Scarlet's romancing of Susan the Rain-Lady - her surname name escapes me - sorry)
I guess I'm just hoping that in this series, CITV give some thought to the order they show episodes in - and that the development and sense of the overall narrative is not lost...

BTW- I was half expecting to see Jean-Luc Picard open the door to Captain Scarlet in the 'Christmas scene' too - him or James Stewart as that part of the plot reminded me of 'It's a Wonderful Life' where James Stewart gets to see an alternative reality...

There seemed to be some hints of (the dreadful) 'Seek and Destroy' (my least favourite classic episode) and 'Attack on Cloudbase' too...
I have to agree with the earlier post that the habit of them all using their Christian names when on duty is annoying - but that's just me, maybe? In moments of stress I guess it might be acceptable - and could be indicative of the character's emotional state? - but I don't think they'd habitually use their names when on duty...
I thought Captain Lady Ochre sounded Irish... possibly?
Nice to see Captain Grey back again and some of the other - as yet fairly anonymous - Angels getting speaking parts.... :wink:
