In NCS, it's a little grayer (no pun intended), as we sometimes see their actual names in identification sequences, or even on their space suits, and they call each other by their real names pretty regularly. It could still protect their identity in most situations, but I almost see it as some sort of "merit badge", that if you're assigned a color, you're part of the senior staff (although I think lieutenants are technically considered as junior staff in the military... ).
