Serena and Elaine welcome Jenny

I really didn't know where to put this news, but I thought it was interesting to pass it along...

Apparently, Captain Ochre and Lieutenant are not the only popular characters which have gone/will go through a sex change within any given fandom, for the sake of a TV series or a movie. Okay, we already had Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, but there's ANOTHER character, much more popular, much better known that that who will join these ever-growing ranks.

This coming summer will see the return of Superman in the movie "Man of Steel". The Superman mythology counts many characters (Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Perry White, Ma and Pa Kent, etc...) and one of them is rumoured to become a woman in this upcoming movie.

Apparently, JIMMY Olsen, photograph and cub reporter of the Daily Planet, will become JENNY Olsen!

Now, maybe the character won't have much of a major role - as stated in one of the comments, but still... we can certainly relate to the fans who might feel put off by such a news. Even though, like Serena and Elaine, Jenny might turn out to be an extremely well-done character.

And let's not forget 'Elementary' - the latest incarnation of Sherlock Holmes - with Dr JOAN Watson (played by Lucy Liu).

I rather liked Starbuck and Boomer being female in the reworked Battlestar Galactica. It never felt as if they'd been changed just for shock value.

I agree Hazel, they were able to create interesting angles and storylines for those characters in BSG. I guess anytime the powers-that-be reboot/reimagine a 'cult' show/movie they want to bring something new and different, changing the sex of a character is the most obvious and perhaps easiest thing to do.
I was just thinking that JJ Abrams didn't feel the need to change anyone's sex when he rebooted Star Trek. But maybe he was just wary of the Wrath of Fan...
