Halloween Challenge, 2012 Edition

Despite this being the middle of July, this week marks the much awaited for launch of Spectrum Headquarters' annual Halloween Challenge

The Halloween Challenge, as most of you probably know, is the most popular Fan Fiction Challenge presented by Spectrum HQ. The concept is simple enough: participants must write a Captain Scarlet fan fiction, related to any of the themes that are usually associated with Halloween. It could be based on the holiday itself, or a horror/fantastic or fantasy tale of your liking. So-called "Imaginary tales", crossovers, or 'multiverse' stories are also accepted within the Halloween Challenge.

Each year, the Halloween Challenge offers to writers a chance to submit those imaginative stories and to readers to read these new, very stranges tales and to discover a new facet of our established authors' talents and to also discover brand new writers who took the opportunity of this challenge to submit their first Halloween Challenge story or even their first ever Captain Scarlet fan fiction!

Alternatively, you can also submit a picture of your own creation (montage, drawing, 3D rendering, comic strips, etc.) which could either be related to a story or not. As long as it is related to any of the themes associated with Halloween, you can submit it!

This first week of October see the start of the posting for the Halloween Challenge!

Second week into our Halloween Challenge, and we have new stories for you!

First: a short story by long-time contributor Caroline Smith, which features one of the fans' most favourite Captain:

This is Nike's second posting on this website, and this young author is proven to be very talentuous and imaginative. A little warning on this story: it's a little graphic in terme of violence, but it doesn't remove ANY of its entertainment value. For his previous opus, he wrote his own take for "Dominion, Part II". Watch out in the near future for other stories from this young writer!

A contributor and collaborator since 2003, Lezli Farrington is the webmaster of "Supermarionation Forever", which we highly recommend you to visit. She's the creator of the "Rose Metcalfe" character, who was also used in other writers' stories (such as a couple of mine). "Torment in Tibet" is a short, Lezi's seventh stories, which is composed of Original Captain Scarlet and New Captain Scarlet stories. All are highly recommended!

"Endangered Species" was supposed to be a 3-parters, but due to the length of the last part, I've decided to cut it in two, so that all parts would be relatively equal in reading. Part 1 was relatively benign in term of violence, but since Part 2, and considering the subject, some coarse language and extreme violence are now present in the story. The author (me) is hoping the story will please fans of Captain Scarlet and of the Predators universe.

I know the trend has been to use the website updates for follow-up comments recently, because it feels natural to respond in that way, but perhaps we've lost sight of some of the threads on the Fanfic part of the forum.

While I was reading Captain Canary's comments on fanfics in the "Fanfic review" thread , I thought maybe that thread had got a bit lost. Maybe we should pull back and use it again for this purpose. So that's what I've done.

You're right, Skybase Girl. I have split the thread so that the fanfic comments are where they should be. Naughty mod...

With a total of fifteen postings this year, the Challenge has been a very succesful event! We had new authors and long-time contributors alike, classic and New Captain Scarlet stories... On that subject, it's the first time ever that the number of NCS outweights that of the classic series, with EIGHT against SEVEN.

I want to thank everyone involved for their contribution: writers for their wonderful stories and for their patience; beta-readers, for their dedication and patience as well and who gave so much time this year! Your dedication to all made the success of this event possible! I bow to you all!

The challenge is now closed, and so I'm giving you rendezvous next year!
