I'm hyper!! And once I get on the dance floor I'll be on it until 5am!!
Anyway this has gone off the original thread topic so I'll go back on course and away from the catfood.
OCs characters, there is this great little fic in one of the Star Wars subFandoms which is basically made of OC POVs on Anakin Skywalker going after Padmé Amidala's would be assassin throughout the chase in Episode 2. It's fast paced and well written and you get the real sense that you're an outsider looking into the world of the Jedi. It mixes all kinds of characters from various backgrounds from traders to slave girls based on an actual scene from the movie. I'll try and find the link as it's a good example of OCs well written.

Own characters done well make a story - done badly, they potentially break them. Trouble is, it isn't always easy to control them.

Sounds like you get too attached to your own characters. It also sounds like you need to show them who's boss.

OCs are easy to create but they have minds of their own unlike the OS charcters who have established personas. Even the most basic of OCs can become trouble.
I find the easiest way to deal with an OC is to do one of these things: kick it up the backside very early on, introduce it vaguely if you intend to reuse it or kill it off altogether in one story.
Oh and welcome Captain Canary.

I try not to flesh own characters out too much. It's easier to deal with them when they're only there to play off a main character, instead of playing too big a role. Think minor characters in a soap - a lot of those don't even talk!

I really like the one episode of Doctor Who with Sally Sparrow, that's a good example of how a OC character could be written, passively dominating a story but with the main focus still being on the familar protagonist/s and putting the OC in the position of the reader.

My NCS OC character Doctor Ivory will be getting more story time in my latest fic but she's still background. It's an interesting mix to get right.
