What did the Mysterons want with President Younger?

Well it doesn't make much sense to me, if the Mysterons were fuming why not just destroy Earth and get it over and done with in one hit rather than dither about it. Evidently the Mysterons have the capabilities to destroy Earth, why hang about?

Because they're cruel and want to make the pleasure last? Or because they want to give Earth a fighting chance?

A theory I exposed at some point was that they were testing the 'Earthmen'. To what end, that's probably to be discovered...

About their change of mind regarding President Younger's fate... Am I mistaken, or was it the first and only time they actually did that? It seems to me that, in general, in the course of an announced threat, they stuck to their annoucement, and didn't deviate from it.

Or did it happen in another occasion? I can't really recall...

Maybe they wanted Younger alive in order to hold a 'show trial' of the leader of the planet that had attacked them? We can speculate that the result would have been guilty and they'd have executed him - thereby fulfilling their original threat.

I rather get the impression Gerry didn't care enough to ever recognise there was a questionable element in the plot, or ask what the rationale was. He was never very complimentary about his puppet heroes.

Well the company had to make money to stay afloat. Still doesn't stop a curious mind thinking and for all we know Gerry may well think up a theory no fan has ever thought of if he is ever asked.
