Can the Mysterons travel through space?
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
My judgment is that they do not.
Otherwise they would have directly attacked Cloudbase long ago. As it was, the one time they did attempt to destroy it was through use of the diamond pulsator that Captain Scarlet, Captain Blue, and Lieutenant Green retrieved from Crater 101 in the Humboldt Sea of Luna.

I've always thought that noncoporeal beings had the ability to travel through the vacuum of space!

The text said something along the lines of 'As part of their campaign to conquer the Universe, the Mysterons attack planet (whatever it was called).
So the people behind the comic thought the Mysterons could travel through space...

Space is big, as Douglas Adams so succinctly put it. Let's face it - anyone who wants to explore it properly is going to have to find a far cleverer way of doing it than sitting on top of a long metal tube, pumping a few thousand gallons of gasolene into the other end and then setting fire to it. Wouldn't it be rather more efficient to find a way to separate our consciousness from our physical form, and then transmit it into a suitable recepticle at the other end of the journey? The concept is very familiar to sci-fi buffs (John Wyndham's "Chocky" instantly springs to mind) but the actual mechanism for doing it has taken on a new slant over the last decade or so with the phenomenal increase in the use of email. How do you send a message from here to Australia these days? Put a letter in the post? Of course not: you email it. That means that you take the message, convert it into a data stream, and transmit that data stream directly to a receiving station that's capable of decyphering and reproducing it. (And doesn't that sound rather like what the Mysterons might be doing when "programming" their newly-created constructs to do something nasty to someone?)
Unfortunately there's just one tiny little snag at the moment, which is that we don't know what our consciousness actually is yet. But whatever it is, it seems to me that that's what "the Mysterons" are - a consciousness, which physically resides in the Complex on Mars, but which can be transmitted into other physical entities via some mechanism that we no doubt cannot hope to understand... yet. Captain Black is the physical entity that most obviously springs to mind, but there are others, including the assortment of booby-traps, both animate and inanimate, that kept Spectrum on its toes throughout both the original and the CGI series.
So what is "consciousness", then? I haven't the faintest idea. Perhaps if Doc Denim is around she might like to help me with this one. But I have a feeling that we'll be closer to understanding it within my lifetime than we are at the moment, even if we haven't worked out how to transfer it into other entities before I quit this mortal coil. Either way, I'm convinced that that's what we've got to learn how to do with our consciousness, if we're going to get off this planet before some clever geek with a suicidal bent works out how to vaporise it.

Good point!

My theory might be, the Mysteron complex would contain some type of "communication" tower, that would transmit a Retrometabolism signal to Earth.
This principle of transmitting such signals through the vacuum of space, is almost somewhat similar to Stingray's ability to transmit/receive radio waves from underwater......at least, in the Anderverse anyway!

I'm quite sure that if we humans (as primitive corporeal beings traveling in expensive tin-cans) are able to cross through interplanetary space, then it simply wouldn't be beyond the Mysterons to do so as well. But again, as Doc Brown has pointed out above (and I have mentioned on prior occasions) what the Mysterons may or may not be capable of will depend a great deal on what you happen to think the Mysterons ARE.
I personally still subscribe to the notion that the Mysterons are a digital intelligence existing in 11 dimensional space-time - and while we aren't (yet) able to do it, I allow my particular version of the Mysterons to travel through dimensions we can't access - something discussed in a few older threads and posts.
Specifically, however, the 'origin of the green rings' was something that I thought the interdimensional resources could (and for me, do) address quite neatly:
just to summarize, here’s a list of the things that I have found the interdimensional field connections, conduits and resources can be used to ‘explain’:
- the fuzziness of the Mysteron complex on Mars - it’s warping off somewhere else.
- just what was that ‘special effect’ that Scarlet and Brown were subjected to before their Saloon crashed? (I think that’s the template scan)
- where exactly the ‘green rings’ are beaming in from -because we never ever see the ‘source’ just the effect (not quite a ‘spotlight’)(I think this is the ‘placement’ scan - we only see this after the fact.)
- anti-matter detonation of reconstructions, without the necessity of bombs on their persons
- split second materialization of reconstructions (popping in)
- the infamous vanishing act that Black has been witnessed to perform on occasion (popping out)
- moving stuff invisibly, by dematerialzation or by brute force (signposts, oil valves, etc.)
- imperviousness of reconstructions (and Scarlet too) to X-rays (due to presence of interdimensional force field)
- Scarlet’s less-than-reliable sixth sense (‘intermittent field interference’)
- why we don’t see ‘dead’ reconstructions - the raw materials are returned to origins to satisfy conservation laws
'Nuff said...link to full discussion shown below - I'm sure everyone must be bored of repetitive cut and paste by now!
