Mysteron 'agent' abilities and weaknesses
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
Throughout both original and new Captain Scarlet there's been evidence of them exploding; increased strength, toughness and agility; glowing eyes; prone to x-rays; sometimes temporarily overcoming their masters control; etc. but was curious as to whether anyone had hypothesised that their abilities were selected on a case-by-case basis or that every agent was created 'equal'.

I can remember Captain Black's eyes 'glowing' in 'Fire at Rig 15', and it has been speculated that he may have temporarily escaped from full-Mysteron control when he didn't kill Symphony in 'Manhunt' (that, along with his famous assertion that, 'The Mysterons, too, have compassion' being taken as 'proof'- which they then go on to disprove in almost every subsequent episode!) but with the exception of Black - who is teleported out of danger on a couple of occasions - I don't recall any of the OCS 'Mysteron agents' showing these attributes, or 'increased strength, toughness and agility'.
Captain Brown does explode, of course, and the agent in 'Point 783' (Major Brooks), but both of these are early on in the series and I don't the trick is repeated again, even when it might be useful.
I cannot speak about NCS Mysteron agents as I still cannot bear to sit through most of the episodes again. I suppose they be 'more agile', as the Mysteronised characters did all seem to be Olympic Class Gymnasts.

Some Fan Fic does ascribe increased stamina, strength and acute senses to Scarlet and other Mysteronised characters...

- Retrometabolism;
- Ability to fly aircraft or drive vehicles without anyone at the helm (no agent involved)
- Voice speaking out of thin air (human voice, that is);
- Imitating voice (see episode "The Trap" where the agent imitages Scarlet's voice);
- Self teleportation (maybe only in the case of Captain Black OR if the agent is with Captain Black (Model Spy)
- Teleportation of objects (the blockade in Expo 68 - but maybe only Black can do that, and not other agents).
- Capacity to transform oneself into a human bomb;
- Capacity to hypnotise a person to death if the said person is looking through a telescope to Mars.
- Capacity to influence objects at distance (whether this object definitely needs to be mysteronised or not is unsure)
- Capacity to 'drug' alcoholic beverage.
Do I miss anything?
And yes, in my opinion, I think that 'as required' seems to be true to form!

The Mysterons remind me of:
a) the ancient gods of Greece; powerful, flawed (and occasionally compassionate, when the mood suited them), who watched from lofty Olympus (Mons...

b) Q in Star Trek TNG. see above.

I'm curious, whatever becomes of agents, after he/she is teleported with Captain Black?
(Somehow, I'm picturing Helga & Black driving up to Rock Snake Point .....and they're both.....getting some!

Aren't I, a pistol?

When I started converting Captain Scarlet to the system I was most familiar with, I actually started with the Mysterons. Mostly because I wanted the racial classes playtested before I started work on the rest.
Anyways I divided the whole mass of entities into three groups, the 'Senior' Mysteron intelligences of the complex, their captains, and the recreated agents. I then assigned roles to each of the groups.
The Seniors were the masterminds, thus got a lot of skills and some special abilities, mainly a 'machine empathy', mind control and telepathy. I also statted out their complex, as well as what I termed as the 'Transbuilder' and the Pulsar Transceiver. I later classed these beings as NPCs.
A majority of what I termed as Captains were humans (or humanoids) bound into the role of walking targeting systems. I assumed that most of them would be in a military career and then threw in an enhanced healing factor and some mental defences. Teleportation is also listed here, as one of their special abilities, subject to the Seniors' approval. However, they could be killed like any other human.
Which leave the 'Agents', the grunts of this army. They got the 'retrometabolism,' and a limited invulnerability to certain types of damage, along with a specific ability according to their role. Those who broke free, like Captain Scarlet, were classed as rogues and could potentially detect Mysteron activity happening in their vincinity. Loyal re-creations could become walking bombs, or they could be promoted to a Captain and gain those abilities instead. Their vulnerabilities: Electricity, (as often seen and referred to) and the inability to regenerate lost appendages (or whole bodies from a limb), thus allowing decapitation as a means to eliminate them.
Just don't expect me to actually post the conversion itself, at least not until the Terms of Use for that RPG are rewritten to allow it. (And I expect their Hades to freeze over before they do so.)

Chris, correct me if I wrong, but I think they did more than simply 'drug' the champagne in The Launching.

They are undoubtedly stronger - I'm thinking of Astrid Winter flinging Scarlet around like he was a toy, in "Achilles Messenger." Presumably, a human woman couldn't have done that. It's not clear how Catain Black gets around - he may be able to teleport. He seems to be able to disappear quite quickly, often without any obvious means of transport.

The Hood, most likely used mystical powers, which included mind control. He also dabbled in voodoo & black magic.
*The Hood's "glowing" eyes, was achieved by small lights in the puppet's head, to achieve his hypnotic effects
I've never noticed Captain Black's eyes ever glowing. The only exception might have been in Fire At Rig 15, when he instructed Jason Smith to turn out the light so he can be seen....that might have just been the glow of the light surrounding him, shining in his glazed eyes.

I'm sure this is getting very off topic, but as long as we are speculating about the Hood, here's some very old correspondence I found in my personal fan-fic archives regarding this very subject - specifically a bit of a plot bunny to explain said glowing eyes:
...a bit of a sub-plot about the Hood, whom I did not find adequately explained anywhere. The 'hypnotic' powers he exhibited all the time really bothered me, until I finally decided he was the product of a secret far-eastern eugenics program, gone out of their control. His eyes glow because he's got some sort of an extra-sensory brain organ that causes his retinal linings to luminesce when that particular organ is engaged in psychic/telekinetic activities. Kind of a bio-feedback sort of thing. The trait is sex-linked (like haemophilia) and is passed on via female offspring, but is only expressed in the male. I have another story fermenting that puts Tin-Tin at risk over it....
Personally speaking, I find that 'mystical' explanations work well in Halloween tales, but they tend to make me nervous in more 'regular' non-spooky-seasonal stories, so I always try to come up with something a bit more pseudo-scientific to keep my inner-Einstein happy!
Enjoy!

PS - I don't remember Black's eyes 'glowing' either - but it's been a long time since I've watched Rig 15. I'll hve to check it out again.
