Lieutenant Silver

I need a second opinion on Lieutenant Silver's accent (for her personnel file). She sounds to me like she's from New Zealand, but then again, she could be Australian.

. Is there someone out there who could confirm it either way for me?

Right, I don't know for certain, but I would hazard a guess at Australian.
Now, I'm not that good at accents, and Australian and New Zealander sound the same to me.

I'm only going with Australian beacause all the characters in NCS seem to come from large, or well-known places.
Houston Texas, Vienna Austria, Brooklyn New Jearsey, Silicon Valley California...all stereotypical popular places for characters to be born. You don't often get a character (In any TV show) born in Korea, for example.
Where as Australia is a continent and practically everyone in the world has heard of it, New Zealand is smaller and not as well known...
My vote: Australia!

I used to know a family from New Zealand when I was younger, and Silver's accent sounds quite like theirs, which is why I wondered, but it's been such a long time since i heard a New Zealand accent that I didn't want to commit.

Putting myself off-topic (yes, that IS allowed sometimes...) Can we count book characters in that one?

The Sinanju master in the series "The Destroyer" (a.k.a. "Remo Williams"), named Chuin, was also Korean - born in a village called... Sinanju. There was a movie made of the series of books, with renowned actor Joel Grey (how often we find those 'colour' names all around us!) playing the part of Chuin...

If I'm not mistaken, they even made a TV pilot (A heavily disguised Roddy MacDowall was Chuin...) for a series that I believe never went further than THAT first episode!

Not having seen all the episodes of NCS, the only example of Silver's voice I think I've heard is in Swarm. If there's more perhaps someone can provide soundbytes.

However, just to put in my two bob's worth (being rather familiar with the Aussie accent) :grin:

, I suffered through, I mean, watched some of Swarm and .... based on the few words I heard, I think she's more New Zealand than Oz.

Perhaps the question that should be asked is not what her accent sounds like but : What is she supposed to be? I wouldn't say GA has always got it right in the accent department!

Thanks, Elentari. I'll try to get you a audio file of her lines asap. Trouble is, I can't remember which episodes of S2 she was in.

Silver only spoke in two episodes...

Series 1: Swarm
Series 2: Proteus

I've managed to get a clip of Silver's lines in 'Proteus'. You'll have to turn your speakers up a bit to hear it, though.

Well I've listened to the mp3 file enough times that I could say the lines with her ... and I'm none the wiser. :roll:

I was hoping for some 'marker' words that would illustrate the difference in the Oz and NZ accents (it's all in how the vowels sound) but that clip neatly avoids any such words!

All I can suggest is (based on Swarm) it seems marginally more NZ than Oz but I wouldn't like to say so in a court of law. If it's an Oz accent it's not a good one. Maybe we need a New Zealander to offer an opinion?

One thing I've decided - if that's ALL she says for the entire series then I honestly don't think it matters all that much.

I think some of the NCS cast are due to appear at Sector 25, the Fanderson con next weekend. I'll make a note to ask them.

Bare in mind, Silver was voiced by Emma Tate, who also voiced Destiny Angel. Don't know what nationality she is, but remember, if she's putting on the accent, it may not sound entirely authentic to the characters country of origin. Thinking about it, Silvers rarely-used voice faltered occasionally, so it may sound different sometimes...

Emma Tate is English, but I will ask what nationality she intended Silver to be. We may have to settle for "all-purpose antipodean".

as I'm part kiwi, I defiantly can pick up on these accents, and I'd say she's Aussie, no question about it!
