Terrorism Wars
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
Basically, I know that in the original series Spectrum was stated to be founded at the end of the Terrorism wars, but can't seem to find out much more than that. Who was the war against (more specific than terrorists), I know some russian separatists were mentioned? And what actually happened?
Also, do we think this conflict happened in the New series.
Sorry, but a lot of my fics seem to be heading towards the terrorism wars as a backdrop (or a main thing, my muse is trying to persaude me to do a backdrop for Orche and Magenta), so all information is welcome and hope someone is still reading this.

I often use this page to help me when I'm writing; but then I lean toward the Supermarionation series in my stories (mainly because I've been writing for ten years). Anyway, I hope my reply helps, if only a little bit.

There is a World Government: with a senate and a President – although nations still have their own heads of state, as they do now. Europe also seems to have a ‘Triumvirate’ (3 rulers) perhaps a legacy of distrust from the wars or even arising from the present EU.
States which are not part of the World Government: Bereznik (described as ‘to the east of Europe’ by Chris Drake) Porto Guava, Tong Viet ken, the United Asiatic Republic and – originally – Britain, are mentioned as ‘hostile’.
Chris Drake and Chris Bentley both mention the undersea races as a threat (Titan et al) and 2 Spectrum Officers come from WASP backgrounds.
Drake’s book says: Spectrum was suggested by the Supreme Commander (Earth Forces) to be capable of ‘swift intelligence gathering’, and as having 'full police powers' on Earth and in space. The fact that not many of the elite officers are from conventional military backgrounds while so many of them have 'espionage' (or at least undercover) experience, might back that up.
Bentley says Spectrum is ‘a global security force that would cut through legal and diplomatic red tape and take the burden of peace keeping from other forces’.
Presumably you could consider the hostile states to be part of a ‘terrorism’ war, but it is not clearly stated as such. Obviously, given the way things have panned out now - over 40 years after the show was devised - terrorism seems a likely option for the rationale behind a force like Spectrum, but whether it is under a World Government or the UN is a moot point, I think.
With NCS, there seems much less clarity. I am no expert – I make no secret of the fact that I don’t like the show much – but there is still an United Nations in existence and Spectrum seems to be responsible to them. (Colonel White goes there in IoD (not sure if it is in part 1 or 2)
I imagine what is known about it is to be found on the OCS sister website:

When writing fan fiction for almost anything in the Anderverse, you can usually make whatever decisions suits your story best; as long as they aren't too outrageous or you can find even the slimmest 'evidence' to back it up. Even no evidence is okay, if you make it sound plausible.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the UN Security Development Committee created Spectrum as a peace-keeping force when the terrorist wars were coming to an end, but since I can't find where that originated from, I may have imagined it!

I have chosen to believe ( in my fanfic) that the wars are probably just an extension of the terrorist threats that face our world today. After all, NCS is set only fifty years or so into our future and it seems quite likely that the likes of Al Queda and other organisations would still pose a threat to world peace. However, this is only my viewpoint on it.

I remember reading something like that too, so you didn't imagine it!
That's the way my head's being going in these matters, but I thought I'd check with the experts that I hadn't missed anyone obvious (being a bit reluntant to use Al Queda and IRA ect in case of upseting anyone)

Thank you for the link. It was interesting to have a look at what was meant to have happened by now (if a little scary of how bad things looked for Europe and UK, speaking as a national).
