Names and such
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force

So with nothing much to do today I went through and sorted out all the Captains names and their respective sibling sets, ready to use them for my stories.
You won't believe how big a pain naming Green's family was (what were his parents [or rather Anderson & co] thinking!) had to get help from fellow name nerds on a forum. So worth it though.
Must admit I've 'borrowed' some suggestions from other people's fics. Own up and I will of course credit.
Would be interesting to compare and contrast other writers' ideas.
So here goes...
Blue
Adam Kristian, Peter Bjorn, Rebecca Eva, Michael Anders 'Pugsley'
Thought I'd go with the traditional/Biblical names, but also acknowledge their Swedish heritage. Rebecca and Pugsley are two of my first characters ever, so couldn't ditch them. Eva is said ay-vuh (wanted to avoid the Adam & Eve thing)
Grey
Naomi Susanna, Bradley James 'Brad', Thomas Nathaniel [decesed], Samuel Jude 'Sam', Keziah Catherine, Miriam Ruth 'Mimi'.
In my story the family is Catholic, hence Biblical names. Bradley is their mother's maiden name, that's why it sticks out.
Magenta
Patrick Murphy, Caitlin Marie
Also his neice, Fae Roisin (who shall become key character of mine)
Have decided Murphy is their mother's maiden name.
Ochre
James & Richard ‘Jim & Rick’
Destiny
Aramis Jacque [deceased], Juliette Clara
Melody
Washington jr. ‘Tony’, Oliver, Antwan, Darrell, Magnolia ‘Mag’
Rhapsody
Catherine, Dianne Matilda, Edward 'Ned'
And *drum roll* the Griffiths family...
Seymour, Edgar, Lucien, William, Quinton, Joshua, Claire, Adah, Lola
(Though perhaps not in that order)
Now of course I haven't forgotten Ms Karen Louise Wainwright, Ms Chan Kwan...
or indeed our hero Paul Charles Arthur Metcalfe (named for Grandad, Dad, and other Grandad respectivley)
It's just that they're only children.
I have a whole lot more to say on the general subject, but shall stop for now.
Yeah I should probably get a life.

Ah well, I'll stick with my flock of lieutenants who've cropped up, should be safe with a few of the colours.

Feel free to use Sage, would love to myself but wouldn't for fear of them ending up a Mary Sue.

On a related and fairly surreal note - a friend and I used to use colours as pseudonyms on an old forum, and were continually trying to outrank each other. He ended up "Field Marshal Garnet" - until we Googled it and discovered there actually existed a real Field Marshal Garnet, C-in-C of the British Army from 1895–1900, whereupon I think it was decided it was too creepy and we ditched it...)

...*ponders* Am I the only person that refuses to use colours like "Purple" and "Yellow" (going for things like "Citrine" or "Heather" instead) because they sound so unflattering...?

And that character has to look like that colour too (well not literally but it has to at least suit them)
LOL that's actually quite cool.
Being a name geek I also consider names for future children, and have several names from CS on my list. Now I could well end up marrying someone who would let you name our child/ren in honour of a puppet, but the odds probably aren't too good (OK I might get away with Adam, but Harmony or Symphony is probably pushing it)
My cousin (who, far as I know, has never seen CS) named Bradley Paul, and I still can't get past that association (and he doesn't look anything like Grey).
So yeah, I'm crazy.

I often try and name according to their base of operations - thus Ivory is South African, Jade is Japanese, Sable from Russia, Dr Heather ("Erica Buccleach") is Scottish (yes, they're all bad puns, I admit it! But I haven't had a Lt Emerald from Ireland yet.

I wonder how many other name-geeks we have here? *curious* I like to devise entire systems of naming creatures, especially if they're aliens...
...given my current obsession, I don't think I could get away with "101" no matter HOW forgiving a potential husband was.

No, you're not! Have a look at Siobhan Zettler's fic "Operation Minerva" for a rather nice quote about colours:
http://www.spectrum-headquarters.com/op ... nerva1.htm
roughly a quarter of the way down, three paragraphs starting at "Scarlet could hardly keep a grin from his face as both Russet and Roan looked at one another, very pleased with themselves". I've always liked that bit.

There's a few in fact.
Scarlet could hardly keep a grin from his face as both Russet and Roan looked at one another, very pleased with themselves. Scarlet wondered, not for the first time, under the garish mercury lights, how Ochre could possibly tell the two apart, and he wondered too just how on earth they'd ever managed to pick (and furthermore, keep) their colours....the only difference that he could see between the colour russet and the colour roan was the difference between a reddish‑brown and a brownish‑red; a very slight difference that simply vanished under the mercury lamps, and that slight difference itself being a significant one beside the non‑existent differences between the bodies inside those two uniforms, because Russet and Roan were identical twin brothers and Scarlet himself had never met a pair of twins that matched so perfectly.
Colonel White himself had been overheard referring to them as 'insufferable young pups' and had personally read them the riot act about how any identity‑based antics would get them summarily busted down to Puce and Fuchsia faster than they could even ask what colours those were.
Colours were not generally assigned, although there was nothing in the regs that said they couldn't be. Officers rating a colour‑code were permitted to select their own from the list of available and HQ approved hues ‑ a list that was growing shorter as the primary colours had long since been exhausted and HQ was having a harder and harder time coming up with colours that anyone would accept. No one had ever picked Fuchsia. Or Puce, for that matter; Scarlet didn't even like the sound of that one. No one had ever picked Orange or Purple either, because each of those had a lousy ring and connotation; no one wanted to be called a fruit all day in the case of Orange, and Purple just sounded too much like a bruise. A code‑name had to be something that you could live with.
Excellent story too, shall have to give it a proper read though sometime.
