And there's plenty of people who will point you in the right direction if you want to give it a go yourself!

I couldn't agree more.
Steven, I only started writing a couple of years ago after a LONG interval..and I found I was hooked. I really wished I'd done it a long time ago...so I think you should take a shot at it..sometimes stories just start as a germ of an idea..but then magically mutate into something you didn't envision at first! It's quite a remarkable and delightful experience to create something that wasn't there before...and even more delightful when you can share it with other people.
There are many people here that would offer to help..me included..so why not take a stab at it?

Five years later, I've improved a lot, and am still going strong. My brother, Captain Tourmaline, is also writing, now, and although he wasn't all that confident to begin with, Chris' kind words and helpful encouragement has changed all that.
If you're not a very confident writer, you're in the right place. Chris is the best person anyone could possibly write for, because she really appreciates your qualities - even if you can't see it, yourself. Give it a go!

When I wrote my first CS story and sent it to Chris, I was convinced it would be rejected and I'd be told in no uncertain terms not to give up my day job

Chris is always keen to encourage and help new writers and no-one should worry that their effort will not be apprieciated - after all, we all know the toil that can be involved with writing a story.
I would like to say a BIG 'Thank You' to Colonel Chris - for her continuing encouragment and her constructive criticism, her support and her friendship. Also for hosting a site that has given me hours of pleasure by posting wonderful stories by my fellow enthusiasts!

My first writing experience was similar. I'd dabbled with a couple of Star Trek stories, but my first CS story started a short time after I came across this site. Strangely enough, I'd been planning to write a Thunderbirds/Captain Scarlet crossover with a friend, and was doing a bit of research, since neither of us had seen CS for a long time. I started reading, and suddenly, a trecherous part of my brain started saying 'what if...?'
That was about March 2001. I never finished the crossover, but I've now got three CS stories under my belt, and several more partially written. I hated my own writing when I started out, but with Chris' encouragement, I persevered, and couldn't be more glad of it.
You've done the hard part, Steven, by having the idea. Once you've done that, the characters can start to write themselves, almost. That's what it feels like, anyway. I often sit back after an intense writing session and think 'Did I really write that?'
If you're really not feeling confidant after trying it out yourself, I'm sure that there would be people willing to help in a collaborative manner. The idea, however, is yours, and will always be yours.
Give it a go, see if we're right...
Do it even to prove us wrong, if you want

The vast majority of my stories were already under my belt when Hazel told me about this person up in Canada who had written this absolutely brilliant story, "All the Colours of the Rainbow," and I was strongly advised to read it. Yes indeed, it held my interest with a strangle-hold despite the author's (then) lack of English proficiency. But she did her job of embarrassing me by acknowledging in the Author's Notes where she got a lot of her ideas

Hats off to you, Chris, and consider these compliments everybody's throwing at you just another birthday present!

Totally ditto everyone else's glowing praise. This site was the first one I came across that had fanfic on, probably wouldn't have even considered writing and posting it otherwise.

Then of course when I did you were ever so sweet and helpful.
Can't even begin to show gratitude for that.
