We are MEAN to our heroes...
Moderator: Spectrum Strike Force
Out of curiosity, , which is (are) the MEANEST scene, the most UNPLEASANT situation, the NASTIEST thing that was ever done to those characters, in any of those fanfic you read?

You're entitled to more than one choice (and more than one post) and you can chose whatever situation(s) you wish.

I think Captain Scarlet getting constantly killed off probably counts as a mean. Just because he's indestructible doesn't mean doesn't have feelings too.
Actually I've no idea about the meanest thing.

Personally speaking, I thought poor Captain Blue got a rough deal in Chris's marvellous -Symphony in Blue - but it might not be the meanest thing to happen to any of them in any story....
Regarding Captain Scarlet - I'm afraid he's the obvious target - because however mean we are to him - he's gonna bounce back for more of the same. Poor old soul.

Ooh yeah he did have a rough time, was a very good story though.
I have written a story (or fragment thereof) in which I almost killed off Captain Blue. So yup extra lashings of angst all round. That was pretty harsh. Not sure I'll do anything with it though. Probably just needed to get some angst out of my system.

Poor Captain Blue..mind you..Marion's put our Blond Bombshell through a few toughies herself...'Ghost in the Machine'
And - she was pretty nasty to Scarlet in 'A Chapter of Accidents' (Flaxen is the Captain's worst nightmare!!! but what a lovely creation she is!!)
Sue Stanhope is pretty mean to just about everyone who wears an ochre, grey or magenta tunic...but she does write a smashingly realistic 'torture by punching' scene (not to mention drowning...)
I guess the stories would be pretty boring if they didnt involve lots of lovely conflict, fighting, angst etc etc...
Keep 'em coming folks..

Meanest scene
A favourite story here - ‘So Beautifully Framed’ by Sue Stanhope really gave Captain Grey a hard time, especially at the point where he realised he’d been set up. I felt very sorry for him! Keith Ansell’s ‘Second Chance’ kind of stayed in my mind for a while as it suggests an alternate scenario of Scarlet’s death where Captain Black tries to help him - but when Scarlet recovers he doesn’t remember and curses Black - very unfair!
Unpleasant situations
Two stories I’ve re-read many times: The scene in ‘Truth and Consequences’ by Kimberly Murphy-Smith where Scarlet tries to explain everything to a father who has discovered the truth - that his son is dead, and has been for 2 years. There were plenty of unpleasant situations in Tiger Jackson’s ‘Attrition’ too - in fact they quickly went from unpleasant to horrific.
Nastiest thing ever done
The story that has stayed in my mind from the first time I read it (and it was one of the first CS fanfics I did read), was Kelly Haycock’s ‘Falling from Grace’. It is still a much read favourite! The idea of the Mysterons killing members of the families of Spectrum personnel then mysteronising them - therefore resulting in Spectrum having to kill the mysteronised copies as well was terrible, then I thought the description of how Captain Black killed Colonel White was the worst part … until I got to the end of the story and discovered what had happened to Captain Blue.
If I think about it longer there’s probably a lot more I could list but these are the first ones that come to mind ... I guess they made an impression.

As for my own work, I have the unpleasant task of trying to write the story in which Rhapsody dies and Scarlet's reaction. I'm not looking forward to that

Why do we do these things to ourselves?
Good luck with it, should be worth it in the end.

I think Tiger's 'Attrition' takes the prize for overall meanness to just about everyone. I love the surprise ending

Falling from Grace is very poignant too - poor old Blue

The psychological torments they all suffer at various times are many and varied... we certainly are mean to them - if they all weren't so noble, brave and strong, they'd all be quivering wrecks by now

I have been 'writing' a story (called Valedictions) for ages - where a great many things come to an end... One day I might finish it - if I can deal with the angst myself of course...

I hope the high standard of stories continues - and that we can continue to find ways to be 'mean' to our heroes and heroines.

No way, I haven't read Jochre's Wild but I am thinking of writing another SS Captain Scarlet or one in a wild west setting inspired by "Living in Harmony."

Yeah Sue is pretty mean poor Magenta (and Grey & Ochre too)
Ah well, we shall have to redress the balance.
Ooh that sounds neat

They would make such good cowboys [hmmmm great mental image], and cowgirls I guess.... am sensing my own 'attack of the plot bunny' here, you want a co-writer?

Not sure if I've read 'Living in Harmony'. Will go check that out now, thanks.

"Living in Harmony" is not a Scarlet fanfic, it is a post-modern episode of "The Prisoner."

Beside, at the moment, I have many other projects going on - might not have the time before a good year or so before starting anything on this one.
If I ever get a suitable plot for it!
