Now that I'm re-writing the story I can look at this map for basis.
A great find, Marion.

I wonder how long it took to come up with that
that's madness with a little 'm'... as in 'crazy'...

I am familiar with Clya Brown's story and I like it very much, as I do all his stories, and (BIG HINT Here) I know a lot of people are - just like me - waiting for what is colloquially known as 'Tina 3' with bated breath....

Any author can write whatever they chose about the characters, their equipment, their locations or their families, just as long as it does not openly contradict the information in the TV shows themselves - which was pretty limited.
This Martian map was in the 'Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds' annual, published in 1969. It reflects what was known at that date about Mars AND the fictional adventures of the Anderson shows - which were made for children.
I doubt, if they realised people would be scrutinising their work so closely almost 40 years later, the authors and artists who produced this map, would have allowed their imaginations such a free rein. But they did, and I, for one, am jolly glad they did.
However, I do take most of it with just a pinch of salt...

But still the maps are fasinating, and I thought my dad buying my mom an acre of land on Mars was bad enough.

Opals have been discovered in the Valles Marineris by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. So - could the Mysterons be using Opal Pulsators as well as Diamond Pulsators?

NASA probe finds opals in Martian crevices. Mars became Australian... uninhabitable... later than thought. Most of Earth's opals come from Australia, a region which like Mars is remote, dry and predominantly red.
The Mysterons are Australian? That explains a lot. You know, I always thought Kangaroos looked a little alien...
