It's a rather surprising look at the pre-Spectrum careers of Captain Grey and Melody Angel - beautifully written, and an engrossing read, which I had the pleasure of beta-ing for her. Highly recommended.

This story is written with such maturity, sensitivity and insight, and I was left feeling quite tearful as I read some scenes, which were filled with a quiet, powerful emotion, yet never descending into melodrama.
You may have gone through the writing wringer, Skybase Girl, but it was worth it, all your hard work has been translated into something very special.
Well done, you've made me (more of) an Iain Taggart fan!

My gut reaction to this story is that it had been going on far too long for my liking. Having said that, now it's done, I am proud of it. I think that, over all, it's the best thing I've done, which is how it should be. I guess. Each new piece should always be the best you can do, otherwise how would you improve?
NCS still isn't very popular, despite more authors and stories being posted on the site. I am doing my best, along with other NCS fans, to change perceptions. If I go even a small way with "Signals", then my time will not have been wasted.

As far as this CS fan is concerned, all the best NCS fanfic in the world won't change my perceptions of the remake series. It is what it is - and unfortunately Spectrum HQ forum regulations prevent me from saying what I really think of it.

Maybe my last post sounded a bit pompous - I realise that there is little I can do to change people's view of NCS. I can well understand most die-hard fans preferring the original series, but it saddens me that NCS seems to engender positive hatred. It may not be nearly as good as it might have been, but that could probably be said for most shows.
Most people reading fiction posted on this site are open-minded enough to treat each story on it's merits, whether it's OCS, NCS or a crossover. That's lucky for me and the other NCS writers, I guess, and I'm personally very flattered by the lovely comments and positive feedback I've received. Does my ego a world of good !
It's just that sometimes, it's very dispiriting to know that however much of your heart and soul is being poured into a story, you're writing about characters who are thoroughly disliked by a large percentage of the likely readership.

Using the best bits of the series and applying them to believable, rounded characters is probably the best way to develop what was - for me - an underwhelming series.
And I am being honest when I say, that is what you do, Skybase Girl. I enjoyed your story, I liked your characters - it's not their fault they inhabit a world I - personally - did not take too and that didn't detract from my enjoyment.
I congratulate you on a very good story!

So little is known about Iain Taggart, yet much of how he appears in NCS could be explained by this; given his past history as depicted here (with all his emotional baggage), one can understand the way he is. I like the past you have given Melody as well. Not enough was done in drawing out the more ‘minor’ characters in the series and this goes a long way in redressing that balance.
I suppose I’m one of those relatively rare CS fans – someone who loves both OCS and NCS. Thank you for sharing this with us!
