Besides, I agree with Hazel 's post:
He might be reconciled to his son, but he's never going to be Spectrum's greatest fan, certainly not to the extent of personally helping to pay for its supplies.
I can honestly say that the John Svenson I have written about - based on the character created by Chris Bishop in the excellent 'Symphony in Blue' - would NOT hand over his money to Spectrum, or any other government agency.

"Sarah, have you seen this .... invoice from Spectrum? YOUR son expects me to pay for some damages he and his friend - that Metcalfe guy - did to some equipment! Oh, and get this - for 'Paul's' uniform. You wait until he comes home for the holidays. I'll give him such a piece of my mind, his head'll be ringing for weeks!"
"Why is he always MY son when you're mad at him, and OUR son when you're proud of him? But it wouldn't hurt you to help them out, John. The boys don't earn that much you know, and they're risking their lives every day..."
"I pay my taxes - and heaven knows they're bad enough! What more do they want? Blood? I am not running a charity, Sarah. Adam must learn fiscal prudence - and his friend as well."
"Adam learnt fiscal prudence at kindergarten..."
"Then he can teach Mr Metcalfe, can't he? I don't know what the younger generation's coming to...."
(ad infinitum)
